Scarcities and Competitions

The upcoming competitions page can be pretty intimidating with the sheer number of competitions on offer across 5 scarcities. This is especially true on the weekend game weeks. Across the competitions there are variations on the line-up building rules and scoring bonuses that need to be considered when deciding what cards to purchase and play.

This guide will first give you an overview of the different scarcities of cards available on Sorare. After that we’ll run through the various competitions on offer on Sorare and what special rules to look out for.

Scarcities

Sorare cards come in 5 different scarcities that have different maximum number of card minted per season. For the more common scarcities the maximum limit is very rarely reached at the moment, offering room for the supply to grow as the Sorare player base expands.

  • Common – The only non-blockchain cards you can play SO5 competitions with. The cards are acquired exclusively through the Amateur drafts and there are no limits on how many people can have a certain player.
  • Limited – The most common variety of the block-chain cards. Limited cards have a maximum run of 1,000 cards per season, although there is no guarantee that many will be minted. In fact, to date there hasn’t been any 1,000/1,000 cards minted.
  • Rare – Rare cards were the original lowest rarity before the introduction of Limiteds. Rare cards are 1 of a possible 100 minted in a given season.
  • Super Rare – Super Rares come in a run of just 10 cards per season. They receive an additional 20% card boost to scoring.
  • Unique – Uniques, as you might have guessed, are 1 of 1 each season. Unlike the other rarities the top uniques are very rarely distributed via prizes. So if you want to compete in the most exclusive competitions you’ll need to spend big in the auction house! They receive an additional 40% card boost to scoring.

Competitions

Each game week runs for half a week (Tues-Fri, Fri-Tues) and there are a lot of different competitions on offer in the Sorare lobby. Especially in game weeks where leagues are in action across the world.

The entry requirements and scoring rules differ depending on the competitions as well as the breakdown of prizes to be offered. Each game week there are cards available to win as well as prize money in the form of Etherium.

Amateur

The Amateur competitions are the free-to-play game on offer in Sorare and a great way to try the SO5 gameplay without buying any cards. There are 6 Amateur competitions available for the top 5 European leagues as well as the MLS.

The Amateur competitions use only common cards that are selected through a draft for each league. There is a 400 point budget to select 8 players and 2 players can be swapped out for new ones per week. Each game week 5 of the 8 players are selected to form an SO5 line-up with card boosts and a 50% captain boost applied to scores.

Semi-Pro

Semi-pro competitions are the first step up from the free-to-play game and are only available to managers with 10 or less limited cards in their gallery. Like Amateur they are league specific for the same 6 leagues and require the use of one limited card from that league. The remaining 4 players are selected from the 8 players you selected in the draft. Again card boosts are applied to scoring as well as a 50% captain boost to the Limited card.

Pro

The final step up towards full limited line-ups are the Pro competitions, again for the same 6 leagues. In this case there are no limitations on who can enter. One common card can be used alongside 4 limited cards, or a full 5 limited cards if you have them. To make line-up building a little trickier, the combined last 15 averages of the 5 players must be under 270 points. Again card boosts are applied as well as a 50% captain bonus applied to one of the limited cards.

Capped Competitions

The capped competitions are relatively new to Sorare having been introduced at the end of January 2023. There are three capped competitions for each card scarcity (except common) and like Pro competitions the combined last 15 averages of the 5 players must be under a certain number. There are some further differences between the three competitions discussed below.

Cap 220 – At each scarcity Cap 220 allows one card from the scarcity below (i.e. one common in Limited 220, one limited in Rare 220 etc) and up to 5 of the competition’s scarcity to be played. The 220 point cap can make line-up building a bit tricky for this one, but it does mean you can use some lower priced cards and still have a shot at winning. There are no card or captain boosts applied in this competition.

Cap 240 – If you’re going to play one competition in a given scarcity, Cap 240 is the one. If your 240 point cap team can over-perform a little and score 250 points you will receive an ETH prize reward regardless of how everyone else performs. The cash value of the ETH you earn increases with scarcity of the competition and if you finish high enough you can even win cards of the next scarcity up. It can be tricky to get the 250 points as like Cap 220 there are no card or captain boosts to increase your score.

Cap 270 – The final capped competition gives you an extra 30 points to play with allowing you to fit in some of the top players on the platform. It also gives you card bonuses and a 50% captain bonus to your cards. There are no ETH rewards on offer in Cap 270, but there are even more cards of the scarcity above compared to Cap 240.

Regular Competitions

I have grouped the next set of tournaments as the ‘Regular’ tournaments, they were the original set of tournaments on Sorare and all have very similar rules. There is no points cap in any of these competitions and each have a 20% captain boost for one card as well as card bonuses applied.

Each competition is available for the 4 scarcities of block-chain cards. Additionally, there is a Rare-Pro level for each competition which allows up to 2 Super Rare cards to be used alongside 3+ Rare cards. In addition to card rewards there are ETH prizes available for the podium places in each competition – amounts increase with the scarcity of the competition.

All Star – The All Star competition allows any card on the platform to be played and is open to play on every game week. In addition to the prize money on offer for the podium places, there are further ETH rewards paid. The number of extra places receiving ETH depends on the competition scarcity.

Under 23 – Like All Star, the Under 23 competition allows players to be used from across the world. In the case the players who were aged 23 or under as of the previous 1st July (currently 1st July 2022).

Regional Competitions – There are four regional competitions on offer that allow only players from certain leagues to be used. Each regional competition will be available if at least one licensed club is playing. This means a club Sorare is currently able to print cards for, so in some game weeks there may be cards that earn scores but don’t have a regional competition to enter.

  • Champion Europe – allows players playing for teams in the top 5 European leagues only.
  • Challenger Europe – allows players from all other European leagues covered on Sorare.
  • America – allows players playing anywhere in the Americas.
  • Asia – Allows players playing in Asia, currently the J-League, K-League and Chinese Super League are the only leagues scored.

Kick-off

The Kick-off competitions are mixed scarcity competitions with the aim of helping users make the step-up in scarcities. The competitions are available in Rare, Super Rare and Unique scarcities and entries are limited to managers with 10 or less cards of that scarcity. One player of the competitions scarcity, earning a 50% captain bonus, must be used alongside 4 of the scarcity below – card boosts are applied to all cards.

The only prizes on offer are a small number of cards of the competition’s scarcity so the competition is quite fierce for them. You would most likely be better off using buying an additional three cards to play Cap 220 rather than Kickoff.

Legends

Legend competitions are one of the only places Legend cards can be used in Sorare. The competitions aren’t run every game week, but when they do they are typically available for all scarcities. The competitions have a 20% captain bonus on top of card bonuses and requires 2 legend cards to enter alongside 3 regular cards.

Legend cards are printed for a specific player on a specific team in a certain season. They score the highest points that any player in their position on that team scored during the game week. For instance if you use the Marco Van Basten legend you will get the highest score of any AC Milan forward in that game week. So, if Rafa Leao scores 66 and Olivier Giroud scores 73, Marco Van Basten will score you 73 points.

Specials

Special competitions are run on an ad-hoc basis and usually include additional rewards beyond cards and cash. Previous prizes have ranged from shirts to game tickets and even opportunities to fly on the AC Milan team plane to a game. These competitions are generally mixed scarcity with additional rules such as needing players from a certain team.

The Academy

Formerly known as Training, the Academy is primarily used to build-up experience on cards and therefore increase their score boosts. Even cards who don’t play earn experience in this competition only. There are a small number of cash prizes on offer, but given that the competition allows any rarities and legend cards to be used winning these rewards isn’t realistic for most managers.
