Scottish Premiership GW#374 Capped Mode Preview

The penultimate round of the Premiership season takes place on Wednesday night with all 12 teams in action. There are two huge games for the relegation battle with 10th and 12th playing each other and 11th hosting 9th placed St Johnstone who have nothing left to play for. Whilst, in the top half it’s Edinburgh versus Glasgow as the Old Firm teams face the two Edinburgh sides.

Given the lack of rest since the previous games, the potential for rotation is there for all sides not just those with nothing to play for. Having said that, with multiple teams playing their final home games they’ll be keen to end their season with a win in front of their home support. So let’s take a look through who is set for success and who may be set for a rest.

In the interest of openness, I do own cards some of the players I’m recommending (you can check out my gallery here) and will mark them with an asterisk (*). But, I’ll also try and include some players I don’t have. I’m certainly not Nostradamus, as evidenced by my Cap 240 results to date, so I recommend you do your own research when picking up players.

The Games

Aberdeen-St Mirren It’s the final home game of the season for Aberdeen and one they need to win after Saturday’s loss to Hearts. They’re just 2 clear of the Jambos in the race for 3rd. Aberdeen have been good home and away recently and excellent at home all season long. Whereas, St Mirren have struggled on the road all year long. St Mirren have plenty of motivation themselves, knowing they need to overcome a 2 point deficit to overtake Hibs for 5th place and probable European football. However, I expect Aberdeen will get the win here and potentially secure 3rd if other results go their way.

Hibernian-Celtic The second of back-to-back games against the Old Firm for Hibernian that threaten to derail their push for Europe. Hibs are just two above St Mirren with two to play. Celtic will continue to rotate in this one, but will still have the stronger side. I think Celtic will earn the three points in this one and set-up a nervous final day for Hibs.

Rangers-Hearts Saturday’s victory against Aberdeen did wonders for Hearts hopes of third place, however they still have a lot of work to do. Rangers are likely to rotate to an extent but will be keen to end their final home game with a good performance and three points. It’s hard to imagine Hearts coming away from Ibrox with anything, potentially setting up a crucial final game in the Edinburgh derby on Saturday.

Dundee United-Kilmarnock This is the most important game of the weekend and it’s a real shame Sky have opted not to televise it. Dundee United come in to this one knowing a loss will end there remote hopes of complete safety. It’s a good opponent for them with Kilmarnock having won just the one way from home all season. Given Dundee’s recent form, though, it is far from a guaranteed win for the home side. I’m expecting a close game in this one, and possibly even a second away win for Killie.

Livingston-Motherwell Livingston return home to the Tony Macaroni Arena for the second game in a row after recording a much needed win against Dundee United. Prior to that they had placed played 5 of their last 6 away from home, where they have been significantly worse all season. It won’t be the easiest of home games against Motherwell. However, they should make more of a game of this one than they have in most of their recent matches.

Ross County-St Johnstone With Kilmarnock away in the last game of the season, Ross County will be keen to get a win here. They come into this one on the back of a last minute 1-0 defeat to Motherwell. St Johnstone on the other hand, clinched safety at the weekend with their own narrow victory over Kilmarnock. Given Ross County’s solid form recently, I think they can get the win in this one and put them in a fantastic position to claim the final safe spot.

Goalkeepers

Ross Laidlaw, Ross County – A rare appearance from the Ross County goalkeeper this week. Facing St Johnstone at home is a solid match-up, in fact Ross County beat them 2-0 away from home last month. Laidlaw is on the expensive side for a bottom half keeper at 47 but he can get right around there when he concedes one goal. You never what can happen with relegation on the line, but I struggle to see St Johnstone scoring multiple goals this weekend.

Samuel Walker*, Kilmarnock – Walker is another goalkeeper that can score well without getting a clean sheet, in fact he even has the potential to hit 50+ when conceding a goal. Kilmarnock haven’t been great on the road this season to say the least. However, Dundee United have really struggled since the table split and, like St Johnstone, scoring multiple goals doesn’t feel that likely.

Other Thoughts: Kelle Roos is marginally cheaper this week at 60 and has a good chance at a clean sheet. However, I don’t think there is any value there. Liam Kelly* is worth considering given Livingston’s recent struggles. Otherwise, Joe Hart* is the only remaining keeper I would consider this week.

Defenders

Alexander Iacovitti, Ross County – Alexander Iacovitti was a really strong AA scorer prior to the World Cup, but since then he has been a lot more inconsistent. It’s brought his L15 done to a very affordable 43 and I think he does provide decent value against St Johnstone this week. He’s certainly able to score 50+ with AA alone and he chips in with the odd decisive as well.

Liam Scales*, Aberdeen – Scales has been one of my favourite Capped Mode players when he plays at home and this is the last chance to use him before he returns to Celtic. This week’s opposition, St Mirren, haven’t been high scorers with just 18 this season. When he plays at Pittodrie, Scales rarely scores under 50 points so at an L15 cost of 47 he should be solid value again this week.

Other Thoughts: Given Kilmarnock’s struggles away from home it might be a rare opportunity to get value from Dundee United defenders. Anthony Ralston* and Yuki Kobayashi remain solid value plays in the Celtic defence and should both see action in this one. Alongside Scales, Angus MacDonald should also provide decent value in the Aberdeen defence.

Midfielders

Jason Holt*, Livingston – Thanks to Livingston’s recent poor form Jason Holt’s L15 remains low at 35. Livingston have played predominantly away from home recently and they are much better at home. When Livingston play at home Jason Holt is usually a good bet for 40+ assuming he starts. He was on the bench at the weekend but should start in this one. Despite a tough match-up against Motherwell, I think he will record a positive AA in this one.

Jonny Hayes*, Aberdeen – Jonny Hayes has turned into a really consistent performer over the last couple of months. He’s scored 46+ in each of his last 6, including away at Rangers. I expect he will best that mark again when he faces St Mirren on Wednesday and at cost of 44 he provides a nice bit of value regardless of whether he grabs a decisive.

Other Thoughts: I’d consider Ylber Ramadani from Aberdeen despite his recent poor Sorare performances. Livingston’s Sean Kelly* is another low cost option that just needs a positive AA to provide value in Cap Mode. Picking the Celtic midfield is a bit of a gamble, but there should be some value there if you find the right player.

Forwards

Bojan Miovski*, Aberdeen – Bojan Miovski looks set to lead the line for the second game in a row. Manager, Barry Robson has said his strike partner, Duk, will return from injury this season. I think it’s unlikely he starts in this one, but either way Miovski will be playing. He’s a decisive dependant option and he should get opportunities in this one. He also take penalties which helps provide some more goal potential.

Mickael Mandron, Motherwell – Mandron has had few starts alongside Kevin van Veen over the last few weeks and should start against Livingston as well. He hasn’t shown much in the way of AA scoring, but given Livingston’s poor form he should have some opportunities at getting a decisive. At a cost of just 37, he won’t kill your line-up either way.

Other Thoughts: Forward is a bit thin on the ground this week, Jordan White is probably a value play but it’s thin value at best. Like the midfielders, there should be value in the Celtic forwards if you can work out who will get the start. Despite Livingston returning home, I will probably avoid both Joel Nouble and Bruce Anderson* given Motherwell’s strong form recently.

My Cap 240 Line-Up

The penultimate shot at a threshold with Scottish Premiership cards this season and it’s an all Premiership team for me. The goalkeeper’s options in the Premiership aren’t great, so I’ve gone with Samuel Walker due to his ability to put up solid AA scores.

I’ve gone with a pair of Aberdeen players at either end of the pitch, both of whom have been mentioned in the article. Liam Scales in the defence should put up a really solid score. With Bojan Miovski up front I’m going to take a punt in the decisive lottery. With Heart and Hibs playing the Old Firm sides, there isn’t really a forward I’m completely confident in this week but I think Miovski is the most likely to get a decisive from my gallery.

In midfield I’ve got Callum McGregor from Celtic. Rotation is something to worry about with Celtic, but the Celtic captain has started every game he has been fit to play in- even when they play midweek and at the weekend. He’s as safe a bet as anyone in the Celtic midfield and should put up a solid score.

Finally, I’ve filled the last spot with St Johnstone’s Andrew Considine. It’s not ideal with St Johnstone having nothing to play for, but he can put up great AA scores and the alternative in my gallery (Daizen Maeda and Morgan Boyes) aren’t exactly inspiring either. At a cost of 39, he can definitely outscore that on a good day.

Gameweek #373 Recap

The Scottish Premiership triple header got off to a solid start for me as my Cap 240 team comfortably earned the threshold.

The team got off to and strong start in the lunch time kick-off. Barrie McKay recorded an assist on top of a solid AA performance to help Hearts beat Aberdeen.

The 3pm kick-offs provided mixed results. There was an error leading to goal from Anthony Ralston and Danny Armstrong had a rare quiet game at Rugby Park. However, Samuel Walker had a really good game. He may have conceded one, but he made 6 other saves to help score an excellent 61 points!

Finally, I had Tomas Ostrak from St Louis City in the MLS playing Saturday night. He started and created a goal as St Louis thrashed Sporting Kansas City 4-0!

It won’t hold for a card reward, but there’s no risk of getting Opta’d before Tuesday!
